Moving with kids: keeping a family move manageable
The logistics of a family move are easier than the emotional pacing of one.
Pack their rooms last, unpack them first
A child's room should be the last one packed and the first one rebuilt. Keeping the familiar things visible until the final day, then having the bed made and the toys accessible on night one, does more for a family move than any other single decision.
Move day care
Arrange care offsite if you can. A move is a day of open doors, heavy items and moving equipment, and no crew can watch a carry path and a toddler at the same time. If children are home, keep them in one room away from the route.
First-night boxes, one per person
Pack a labelled box for each family member with two days of clothes, toiletries, chargers, a favourite item and bedding. Load them last so they come off first.
- One clearly named box per person
- Bedding and towels accessible without opening ten cartons
- Snacks, water and cutlery in the same box
Pets
Keep pets in a closed room with water and a familiar item, or offsite. Update their tags and microchip address the same week you update yours.
