The eight-week moving checklist for a GTA move
Most move-day problems are booking problems from four weeks earlier. Here is the order to do things in.
Eight to six weeks out
This is the window where dates are still flexible and choices are cheap. Confirm your possession or lease start date in writing, then request quotes while you still have options — month-end and summer dates in the GTA fill first.
If either address is a condo or apartment, ask property management two questions now: what the move-in window is, and what documentation they require from the moving company.

- Ask both buildings about move windows and insurance requirements
- Start a keep / donate / discard pass, room by room
Five to three weeks out
Book the elevator. This single step causes more rescheduled moves than anything else, because windows are limited and shared. Once it is booked, the rest of the day can be planned around it.
Begin packing the categories you will not miss: books, off-season clothing, decor, spare linens. Label by destination room and contents, not just 'kitchen'.
- Book service elevators at origin and destination
- Order or arrange packing materials
- Start utility transfers and address changes
- Pack low-use categories first
Two weeks to move day
Confirm parking and staging. In much of Toronto that means checking standing restrictions or arranging a permit; in townhome communities it means identifying where a truck can legally sit.
Pack an essentials box that travels with you rather than on the truck: chargers, medication, tools, toilet paper, a change of clothes, coffee. On move day it is the difference between an easy first night and a search through forty cartons.
